You have no idea where you are or how you got there. Strange circuitry panels and screens cover the walls, and large pipes sprout like columns from the corners of the room. In the middle of the space, a pedestal covered in buttons pulses with a glowing light. Somewhere, machinery chirps and hums.

All of a sudden, a voice breaks in over the intercom, a man with the broad accent of a gold prospector from an old Hollywood film. You’ve been abducted by aliens, he says. And you’re going to need to solve some puzzles if you want to get home.

The report identifies the latest trends and most relevant factors powering growth. This year's findings reveal how technology and oil played significant roles in regional economies but in different ways as those industries moved in opposite directions.

The nation's tech centers are prominent among the index's top performers, as are cities that have experienced high technology growth rates. Conversely, the drop in oil prices has undercut the economic performance of several metros whose economies are focused on shale-oil extraction.
